Night Psalms - Thoughts for the dark times of your life...
The author of Psalm 116 has suffered a severe illness and has been in the very jaws of death. Perhaps physicians and friends gave him up except for some friends who remained by his side praying. We are told that he prayed with faith, even against all odds. This psalm is a glorious shout of thanksgiving because of deliverance from the illness that was already ushering him into the realm of the dead.
Perhaps the psalmist has a word for us in our generation. Not only could we pause to express our thanks, but on bended knee we could dedicate ourselves wholly and completely to the One who has made us indebted to Him for life now and for eternal life in Heaven when we come to death.
"Gracious is the Lord, and righteous; yea, our God is merciful. The Lord preserveth the simple: I was brought low, and he helped me. Return unto thy rest, O my soul; for the Lord hath dealt bountifully with thee. For thou hast delivered my soul from death, mine eyes from tears, and my feet from falling." (Psalm 116:5-8)
